Russian Uncovered is one of the bigger online Russian courses.
So in this review, I want to show you the good, the bad, and the ugly of Russian Uncovered by Olly Richards – so you can make an informed decision about whether this is a course you want to sign up for.
I’ve already been learning Russian for 10 years, so I have a pretty good idea of which courses are solid… and which ones are not.
Let’s dive in.
What Is Russian Uncovered?
Russian Uncovered consists of about 20 short stories in Russian, each around one page long.
Each lesson follows a clear structure. You:
- Listen and read the story
- Go through cognates
- Learn key vocabulary
- Study grammar explanations
- Explore cultural insights
- Work on pronunciation
- Take a quiz
It’s structured. It’s organized. And it’s very easy to follow.
You don’t have to guess what to do next.
You just:
- Finish lesson 1
- Move to lesson 2
- Repeat
And that’s a big plus.
What I like about the Storylearning approach
If you want to have real conversations in Russian instead of just studying it, I created a structured 30‑lesson audio course called Russian Conversations Unlocked. I've designed it for adult learners who want to learn to actually communicate with native speakers. You can find more information here.
1. Listening and Reading at the Same Time
This is, in my opinion, the strongest part of the course.
You’re forced to read while listening.
And this is incredibly powerful.
Even now – after 10 years of learning Russian – I still do this. When I was 1-3 years into learning, I started listening to an audiobook while reading the text at the same time.
Why?
Because your brain absorbs things much faster.
It’s almost like learning at 1.5x speed.
You:
- Understand the meaning faster
- Improve your pronunciation automatically
- Learn stress patterns naturally
For example:
You might read: молоко
And think: “Ah yes, moloko.”
But when you hear it, you realize it sounds more like: малако
The stress becomes clear immediately.
That alone improves your speech tremendously.
So I’m very happy they include audio.
2. Smart Use of Cognates
Another thing Russian Uncovered does well is using cognates.
For example:
- Аэропорт = airport
- Пассажиры = passengers
- Сестра = sister
You instantly recognize 10% of the story.
This gives beginners momentum.
It feels like:
“Oh wait… I already understand part of this!”
And that motivation matters.
I use the same strategy in my own course Russian Conversations Unlocked, because cognates are basically a cheat code for learning Russian.
Why not use them?
3. Clear Vocabulary & Grammar Explanations
Each lesson includes video explanations (usually 10-20 minutes each).
The teacher is a native speaker and explains:
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Usage
- Cultural context
It’s not dry. It’s not robotic.
It feels like a real lesson.
For example, in the first lesson they explain:
- Masculine nouns ending in consonants
- Feminine nouns ending in -а
Clear. Structured. Logical.
4. Cultural Insights
I LOVE that they include culture.
Language without culture is incomplete.
Some courses completely ignore this – and that’s a shame.
I love discovering sayings like: море по колено
(Literally: “the sea up to your knees” – meaning you’re so drunk or confident you don’t care about anything.)
When I used expressions like that in Russia, natives were shocked.
That’s what makes language fun.
Russian Uncovered includes cultural notes, which is a big plus.
5. Very Structured & Easy to Follow
Compared to some courses (like RussianPod101), which can feel overwhelming and chaotic…
Russian Uncovered is simple.
You don’t wonder:
- “What should I do next?”
- “Which lesson comes first?”
- “Am I doing this right?”
You just follow the system.
And for many learners, that structure is exactly what they need.
Unsure about pronunciation lessons
They include pronunciation training.
That’s good.
But here’s the thing:
Beginners often overemphasize pronunciation.
I get emails like:
“I just started Russian but I can’t pronounce Ы properly.”
I couldn’t pronounce some sounds even after 2-3 years.
If you:
- Listen to correct Russian
- Practice speaking regularly
Your pronunciation will improve naturally.
Yes – work on pronunciation.
But don’t let it stop you from speaking.
It’s better to speak with a bad accent than not speak at all.
If you don’t speak, you don’t improve.
Not ideal parts of the course
1. Not Enough Speaking Practice
This is the biggest issue.
The course teaches:
- Vocabulary
- Grammar
- Reading
- Listening
But speaking?
Not really.
They give you discussion prompts and say: “Use this with a language partner.”
That’s a decent solution.
But it doesn’t force you to construct sentences.
And that’s where most learners struggle.
For example, you might know the separate words:
- Я говорю по-русски
- Потому что
- Крутой
- Язык
But can you automatically say:
Я учу русский язык, потому что это крутой язык.
That ability doesn’t come from understanding grammar.
It comes from structured speaking practice.
This is exactly why many learners study for a year… and still freeze in conversation.
2. Too Much Grammar Too Fast
This is my second concern.
Russian grammar is heavy.
And most of the difficulty is at the beginning.
In lesson one, things are manageable.
But already in lesson two you’re dealing with:
- Pronouns
- Verb conjugations
- Possessive pronouns
- Multiple grammar concepts at once
That can become overwhelming – especially for true beginners.
In my opinion, grammar should be introduced slower.
You want to:
- Learn something
- Internalize it
- Use it
- Feel confident with it
Instead of stacking 5–6 new concepts in one lesson.
Is Russian Uncovered Good for Beginners?
This is important.
The course says it’s for beginners.
Technically, yes – it teaches the alphabet.
But if you know zero Russian, I think it may feel overwhelming.
However…
If you:
- Have studied for a few months
- Know basic phrases
- Have tried speaking a little
- Understand simple sentences
Then Russian Uncovered can take your:
- Reading
- Listening
- Grammar
- Vocabulary
To the next level.
Just don’t rely on it alone.
Combine it with something that forces you to speak.
Final Verdict on Russian Uncovered
Here’s what I like about the course:
- Great structure
- Excellent listening + reading method
- Smart use of cognates
- Cultural insights
- Clear explanations
And here is what I’m not impressed about:
- Not enough built-in speaking practice
- Grammar introduced too quickly for absolute beginners
Who is the StoryLearning method best for?
Intermediate beginners who already have a small base.
Not complete beginners.

And remember:
No course will make you fluent unless you actually speak.
That’s the real key.
What should you do next?
Most learners don't struggle because Russian is "too hard."
They struggle because they don't train speaking directly.
- You can study vocabulary
- you can memorize Grammar
- You can listen for hours
But if you don't practice building sentences in real time, you'll still struggle when someone speaks to you.
One of my students once told me:
“I have been studying Russian for a year. In my head I can prepare basic sentences, yet when it comes to actually speaking I ‘chock’.”That's not a knowledge problem.
That’s a training problem.
Your weakest skill determins your conversational level.

And for most learners, that weakest skill is speaking.
That's why I built Russian Conversations Unlocked - a structured 30-lesson audio course designed to train real-time speaking ability step by step.
