posledniy bogatyr reviewIf you’re into movies, then there is one thing that you should do if you’re serious about learning Russian. What is it? Well, you guessed it correctly: watch Russian movies! Watching movies in Russian is a great way to increase your understanding of the Russian language. You’ll also learn a great deal about the culture and how the Russian people are. One of the movies I watched recently was Posledniy Bogatyr (the Last Warrior in English). It’s a great movie that combines the real world with a fantasy world. Are you becoming curious? I sure hope so – let’s dive into our Posledniy Bogatyr review!

Note: the movie came out in 2017, but it’s already online. So you can watch it at home. At the end of this article you’ll find a link where you can watch the movie!

Posledniy Bogatyr review

I enjoyed the movie a lot. Many people who are learning Russian are recommending all the older Soviet movies to begin with. And that’s great. However, I’ve reached the point where I’ve seen them all. So a new modern Russian movie was exactly what I needed. If you too are looking for new movies to watch, then Poslendiy Bogatyr is great for you. Check out the plot description below to see if the movie is for you.

The director is Dmitriy Dyachenko, who is also famours for his great movie: O Chyom Govoryat Muzhchiny & O Chyom Eshchyo Govoryat Muzhchiny. They are both great films and if you enjoyed them, I’m sure that you’ll like this Posledniy Bogatyr review too!

Plot overview

The movie is about Ivan, a young guy in Moscow living the good life. He works as a ‘white’ magician who performs on TV shows and helps people with their spiritual problems. Now, he’s mainly a con artist and after the husband of one of his clients finds out he has conned his wife. After a long chase Balthasar ends up in the fairy world of Belogorye.

Here he ends up in an old battle between the forces of light and dark and he has to make a choice what he is going to do. He joins up with some other well-known Russian fairy tale characters (Baba Yaga, Koshchey and Dobrynya). It’s a fun story in which they have a lot of adventures – and you’ll be sitting on your chair watching how they do it all.

Is it a good movie for learning Russian?

Chances are that you want to watch this movie for improving on your Russian skills. If so, then I want to let you know in this Posledniy Bogatyr review that the movie is perfectly suited for Russian language learners. Here are some of my observations during the movie:

  • Difficulty of language – the language used in the movie isn’t very hard. It’s a mainstream Russian movie so it appeals to a wide audience.  Which includes kids, so in order to understand the plot while watching I recommend you are an intermediate Russian speaker.
  • With or without subs? – depending on your level in Russian you can watch it with or without subs. If you’re just starting out, then I recommend you keep the spoken language in Russian – but the subs in English. This will train your ears for learning how real Russian is being spoken. If you’re a bit more experienced then you can try it with Russian subs. This is a great training for really becoming better. However, if the level is too advanced for you, your mind can become tired fast while watching.
  • Relevance of the language used – half of the movie situates in Moscow. And the language that is used in these parts is very common spoken Russian. That means that you can easily use the words and phrases yourself. Contrary to some art movies (or science fiction ones), where the vocabulary is almost useless – you can actually use the vocabulary that is used in this movie and you’ll come across normally to native Russian speakers.
  • Length –  the movie is almost 2 hours which makes it a good thing to watch at night after work. You’ll get a ton of extra Russian practice but it won’t feel that way since you’re having fun. Also, the movie has many action parts in which simple language is spoken – your mind can rest during these parts for some of the more conversation heavy parts.
