Michel Thomas

The first course that I followed when I was just starting out learning Russian was Michel Thomas Russian for beginners.

The course is a great example of everything that you need as a beginner. Where most courses focus on long lists of grammar and throw a lot of vocabulary at you at great speed – Michel Thomas focuses on the essentials.

What this means is that, when you’re listening to these Russian CDs, you will be taken by the hand and given a good and insightful introduction to the Russian language.

In addition, you’ll actually learn how to speak Russian better  than with conventional programs. That is because the program takes you into a real classroom with other speakers… This allows you to progress through the beginner stages at amazing speed…!

Russianpod 101

The course that took my Russian fluency to the next level was Russianpod 101. Actually, it’s not a real course… but more of a complete Russian learning center.

With Russianpod 101 you can find everything you need to advance from a complete beginner Russian speaker to upper intermediate fluency.

Their main strength is their audio podcasts. And the accompanying PDFs that explain all the grammar and vocabulary used in the audio.

Each lesson is around 12-20 minutes long, which makes it perfect to learn Russian in your car!

Out of these 3 best Russian language CDs, I find that Russianpod 101 gives you the most bang for your buck. Read my detailed guide on Russianpod 101 here.

Glossika Russian

Glossika Russian is a real gem among Russian courses. It takes a completely new approach to language learning.

Instead of bombarding you with grammar and vocabulary all Glossika asks of you is that you LISTEN  to their CDs.

Each CD is around 15-20 minutes long and contains hundreds of Russian sentences.

You’ll learn a great deal of new words and ready-to-use phrases when you listen to the Glossika course.

It works by spaced repetition. That’s a fancy word to explain that each day when you listen to the CDs, you’ll hear a specific sentence a couple of times:

  • First you’ll hear the Russian sentences
  • Than you hear the English translation

After you’ve heard it ~5 times (the program then goes on to new sentences), the phrase will be repeated the next day. Each sentence you will hear for a couple of days. And believe me, if you’ve heard a specific phrase 5 times a day for 4 days you will remember that phrase!

Now, I do not recommend Glossika as a standalone course. Since you do need to know how the Russian grammar rules works. But if you want a quick and easy way to improve your Russian vocabulary in just 20 minutes a day… Glossika can greatly help you out!

If you want to find out exactly how Glossika works, you can find the answer here.
